Completely agree that what's happening now probably began mid-century with the Red Scare, has accelerated over the past 20 years, and intensified in the last 2 or 3. Of course, the average person doesn't live long enough to see the pattern unfolding (or care enough to notice it), which makes it all the more easy to slip down this slope.
