Great article. I have been observing the same dynamic unfolding on the Left for the past several years.
At first, I thought I was imagining things. I had been a life-long Democrat (who also happens to be gay and black), but shortly before Trump was elected I could see the party was changing— so much so that I was accused of being a “right-winger” for not voting for Hillary and choosing to sit out the election because both “choices” were so miserable.
That Russell Brand, a man I have listened to an loved for years, is now accused of being “right wing,” speaks volumes about the New Left: they are desperately afraid of being called out by their own, and they label anyone with the courage to do so traitors.
When you have the gall to vilify a man who is so ostensibly anti-corporate interest, anti-corporate-owned media, embracing of other races and sexualities (how many bisexual male celebrities do you know, for Chrissakes?), and anti-war, is demonized for being “right wing,” you know you’re in bizarro world. The New Left is essentially broadcasting to the word: left wing = deranged, right wing = common sense.
I wrote a piece a few months ago that dives into this issue. My sense is that the essential difference between the New Left and the Old Left is that the New Left has become a slave to the Establishment:
