Good question. I actually think granting civil rights to these groups was considered immoral (not conforming to accepted standards of morality) AND amoral (lacking a moral sensibility of the “rightness” of “wrongness” of something). Basically, much of America embraced a completely backwards way of thinking only decades ago, yet it was accepted as the “right” way to think. Challenging the dominant mindset was deemed heretical.
