Oh, I completely agree that Whoopi had an honest misinterpretation of racism. But the fact remains that many in the Jewish community found it highly insulting, much the same way that the black community frequently takes offense at statements that white people consider to be relatively harmless.

My point is that race is such a tricky thing right now that it’s easy to offend anyone of a different race. There was no lasting damage from Roseanne’s Tweet, either — but she literally lost her career over it. The response was disproportionate to the offense. Why not simply suspend her for two weeks like Whoopi?
