Very good points, Dave, and you are right about the .1%. Thank you for the correction. The statistic is correctly stated as follows: the top 1/10th of 1% have as much wealth as the bottom 90% of Americans (found here: https://www.theguardian.com/business/2014/nov/13/us-wealth-inequality-top-01-worth-as-much-as-the-bottom-90). Yes, any sort of redistribution is going to rankle those at the top and invite major conflict, and the thought of redistribution is even terrifying to those who have much less to lose. But it’s very clear now, as MLK, Jr. said, that “something is wrong with the economic system of our nation.” I’m not sure how we, as a society, can fix what’s gone wrong, but I do know that until it’s fixed we will face much greater conflict and chaos. The bottom 90% may not individually have as much to lose, but what they are losing “matters” much more because it’s literally becoming a matter of life and death for many.
